Reliance Industries plans to go solo on its telecom initiative of providing high-end data offerings and is exploring the possibility of building its own mobile phones, a senior company official said at its Annual General Body meeting on Thursday. Tata Teleservices plans to move court if forced to match 2G auction price
Economic Times
Tata Teleservices, which offers both GSM and CDMA-based mobile services, has threatened to initiate legal action if the government asks existing mobile phone companies to pay the auction-determined price for all 2G airwaves they hold for the remaining period of their licences. "Since the intention is to charge for all spectrum prospectively, those who have the shorter period for renewal would stand to gain differentially as compared to those whose licences were issued later and hence have longer periods for renewal," Tata Teleservices Managing Director N Srinath said to the telecom department, in a communication. Tata Teleservices will be among the worst affected by the government's move because its mobile permits are valid till 2023-24. He also said that with such a policy, 'dual-technology operators will have no choice but to terminate their CDMA services and take huge write-offs on all their past investments.' Axiata dials Birla for tower deal
Times of India
Malaysian telecom giant Axiata Group has approached Aditya Birla group-owned Idea Cellular to build a trans-national tower company, with operations across Southeast Asian markets. Axiata wants to acquire or merge more than 8,000 towers of the Indian mobile operator as it looks to create a unified tower entity with a presence in seven nations, said banking sources directly familiar with the matter. Axiata holds a stake of just under 20% in Idea Cellular. Aditya Birla would look at participating in the proposed trans-national tower company after taking stock of the financial viability and diverse regulatory frameworks, said sources close to the development. Idea Cellular has more than 8,000 towers apart from the 11,000 it transferred to Indus Towers, in which it holds a stake along with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone.

Telcos miss deadline for detection of accurate user location
Economic Times
Telecom companies have missed the May-end deadline to comply with regulatory norms on detection of accurate user location and cited huge cost and technology unavailability as reasons for not meeting the target. The Department of Telecom (DoT) had amended licence conditions of telecom service providers and asked them to provide location details of users as part of call data records. According to the target set by DoT, law enforcement agencies should be able to track 30 percent mobile users in urban areas within 50 metres of the location pointed out by by the telecom operator. Operators were also mandated to provide location details of 50 percent of subscribers within 300 metres in semi-urban and rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and other north-eastern states. TEMA wants government to withdraw diesel subsidy to telcos
Economic Times
An industry association representing telecom equipment makers in India has asked the government to withdraw diesel subsidy given to mobile phone companies and tower providers and instead levy a one-time tax per tower. The Telecom Equipment Manufacturer's Association (TEMA) in a communication to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has suggested the government to levy a one-time tax of Rs 10 lakh per site, on all the sites owned by mobile operators equivalent to 12 years of subsidy to offset, fully or partially, loss to the exchequer on account of subsidy. This will give the government revenue to the tune of Rs 50,000 crore, said TEMA Honorary Director General Ashok Aggarwal, on Thursday. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

Plans to refarm spectrum will depend on armed forces freeing up additional frequencies
Economic Times
India's plans to re-farm spectrum, or re-distribute airwaves that are currently held by incumbent mobile phone companies through auctions, will depend on its armed forces freeing up additional frequencies for commercial telephony. An analysis by the telecom department has revealed that re-farming cannot be executed in full in as many as 12 of the 22 regions, unless the armed forces vacate about 55 MHz of spectrum in the 1800 MHz band. However, the armed forces vacating these airwaves is linked to the completion of the alternative (optic fibre) network that the DoT is building for the defence forces. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

Prof. Ken Sakamura is also known to have proposed and demonstrated the concept in Japan through the TRON Smart House model in the 1980s.

India is developing its own embedded design market, moving away from being a strictly outsourced industry. This means that Indian designers and engineers will have to drive actual product innovation and move towards product ownership, which to some extent is already happening. Embedded system development in India started during the early 2000s. According to a report released by National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) along with Zinnov Management Consulting, the total addressable embedded system R&D global opportunity is expected to reach $89 billion by 2015. India now has an established base for R&D and can leapfrog both for international and domestic consumption.

Starting with textiles in the late seventies, Reliance pursued a strategy of backward vertical integration - in polyester, fibre intermediates, plastics, petrochemicals, petroleum refining and oil and gas exploration and production - to be fully integrated along the materials and energy value chain. The Group's activities span exploration and production of oil and gas, petroleum refining and marketing, petrochemicals (polyester, fibre intermediates, plastics and chemicals), textiles, retail and special economic zones. Reliance enjoys global leadership in its businesses, being the largest polyester yarn and fibre producer in the world and among the top five to ten producers in the world in major petrochemical products.
