Pesky SMSes back; unregistered telemarketers use new SIM cards & message services
Economic Times
Unsolicited text messages are once again making a mockery of the government's bid to restrict spam on mobile phones. India's telecom regulator had, in September 2011, allowed cellular operators to charge five paise for every promotional short text message sent on their networks to deter advertisers from defying an earlier ban. "Spam messages from unknown mobile numbers have increased substantially," a provider of bulk text messages said. Telemarketing companies that are not registered with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) are using new mobile phone SIM cards and internet portals that offer bulk messaging services to beat curbs imposed by the regulator. Idea, Tata Tele spar over licence cancellation issue
Hindu Business Line
The Aditya Birla Group and the Tatas, once joint venture partners, are now clashing over the issue of cancelling Tata Teleservices' GSM spectrum. The latest clash has arisen because the Supreme Court, in its order on February 2, had said that all licences issued on or after January 10, 2008 and subsequent allocation of spectrum to the licences are declared illegal and are quashed. The problem is that Tata Teleservices got its licences long before 2008 but got permission to own GSM spectrum after this date. The two were joint venture partners in Idea Cellular but then had a falling out after the Tatas started the CDMA operations under Tata Teleservices. This dispute is still pending with the Telecom Ministry. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email
