Lines cleared for free nationwide roaming, govt to take final call
Business Standard
The Cabinet on Thursday cleared a proposal to allow free roaming across the country as part of the new telecom policy. It also endorsed full number portability. Despite stiff opposition from incumbent operators, the Cabinet pushed through a proposal permitting refarming of spectrum. Communications Minister Kapil Sibal said the modalities for it would be decided on by the EGoM (Empowered Group of Ministers) under Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. To boost domestic manufacturing, the draft policy endorsed preferential market access to them. The policy has endorsed the TRAI recommendation for liberalisation of spectrum, apart from that for de-linking licences from spectrum. It means 1,800-MHz spectrum can be used not only for 2G but also LTE-4G services, depending on the operator's choice. It has also accepted the idea of a unified licensing regime. Telenor not to quit India, to participate in spectrum auctions with new partner
Economic Times
Norway's Telenor on Thursday hinted it had dropped plans to exit India and would participate in the upcoming spectrum auctions with a new partner after scrapping its existing joint venture with real-estate developer Unitech Ltd. "We understand that the Telecom Commission wants to put up all available 2G spectrum for sale. We are happy they have opposed the stringent rollout obligations specified by TRAI. The commission has also not approved the reserve price proposed by TRAI, and this is positive for us because there may be some considerations in the government to reduce the minimum price," Telenor Executive Vice President & Asia Head Sigve Brekke said. Telenor's India operations were among the worst affected by the Supreme Court's February 2 order cancelling licences. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

As consumers move away from the tethered world of the personal computers to mobile devices, an increasing number of startups are shifting their focus to the Indian mobile services market, arguably the fastest growing geography for mobile-based services. Having identified India as their core market, these companies are developing products ranging from cloud platforms to application software and mobile commerce gateways. These are specifically designed for the local marketplace, but have the potential to be replicated for global audiences too. The growth has been driven by innovative pricing and the continued expansion of mobile services in semi-urban and rural India. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

Hindu Business Line
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has told Department of Telecom that the proposed reserve price for 2G spectrum auction will not have any adverse impact on the industry, nor will it adversely affect the affordability to the consumer. US officials, others say no to UN Internet control
Economic Times
U.S. officials, lawmakers and technology leaders were united in opposition to place the Internet under the jurisdiction of the International Telecommunications Union, a UN agency which governs telecom systems. This comes ahead of a meeting in December of the ITU where some nations will be pressing for the agency to formally govern the Internet. Vint Cerf, a computer scientist often called the "father of the Internet," who is now Google's "chief Internet evangelist," also expressed concern about the proposal saying that such a move "would jeopardize the network's innovative evolution and its multi-faceted success." First impressions on Fluent, the start up promising The Future Of Email
TechCrunch
Although there has been much complaining about the sorry state of email, very few companies are addressing the situation. But there is an interesting startup Fluent which proclaims it is offering "the future of email." Composing, replying, reading, archiving, deleting, searching, starring and "to-do"ing email can all be done within the one stream-like interface, no switching needed. While not there yet in terms of implementation, the company has a decidedly mobile-first mindset when it comes to using Fluent on smaller screens, like smartphones and iPads. Opera Mini 7 released for feature phones
BGR India
It is well known that feature phones have below par web browsers if one is lucky enough to have one. Opera has released a version of its famed Mini 7 browser, especially tailored for feature phones that also incorporates social networking features. This browser is supported by devices built on Java, Symbian and BlackBerry OS, so it is not entirely a feature phone browser. The most interesting feature of Opera Mini 7 is that it integrates the users Facebook and Twitter stream right inside the browser window, hence making separate apps redundant. The browser uses some data crunching technologies that use minimum bandwidth to keep mobile internet costs to a bare minimum. Opera Mini 7 can be downloaded for free from m.opera.com. The Evolving Security Paradigm in an increasingly Mobile World (Premium) - View Free Sample
As more and more employees use personal mobile devices to access enterprise networks and applications, there are increasing risks to the security of confidential information through new entrance points for potential attacks. Mobile technology today is taking communications and security to a whole new level. Consumers are increasingly looking to bring their smartphones, tablets and other devices that have transformed their personal lives to work. This means people can work anywhere at any time, creating new efficiencies for businesses -but also new challenges for protecting enterprise data. Rapid adoption of mobile technology will soon make security concerns in the wireless environment at least equal to those in the wired world. While these risks may persuade IT departments to think twice about deploying the latest mobile technologies, the headwind favouring delivery of broader access to applications and emerging cloudbased services underlines the fact that mobile devices are now an essential business productivity tool.

1G Solution for a 3G World (Premium) - View Free Sample
With the introduction of expensive 3G in 2011 and 4G in 2012 in India, here is an effective application which will help one to stay connected at reasonably less cost. 2011 started with a lot of anticipation around the onset of 3G and recent introduction of 4G--how they would change the mobile landscape. There was a heightened sense of anxiety, and common perception was that the game-changing technology would forever alter the way users used their phones. After all, 3G itself was arriving after a very long wait and tremendous investments into spectrum. Although talking of 4G is too early now, but as far as 3G is concerned, in hindsight, it turned out to be a bit of an anti-climax. What did not happen overnight is the explosive proliferation of the mobile internet. I was fortunate to witness this whole cycle play out in both Egypt and Indonesia, not so long ago, in exactly the same fashion. Of course, 3G means better data speed for existing data users but that literally touches only one in 10 mobile users in India today. The IAMAI report pegs mobile data users at 46 mn, while mobile users are over 600 mn.

Why Smartphones will make a difference in Advertising (Premium) - View Free Sample
A recent study conducted by Google and IPSOS indicates that India will soon be a 'mobile first' nation for communication. The challenge of advertising on mobile platforms is the most over-rated concern in the digital advertising domain in India. While presence of brands on digital media has only been increasing every year, along with spends, mobile advertising garners a rather negligible share in the total advertising pie. As per recent industry estimates, mobile advertising constitutes not more than 1% share of the total ad spends in the Rs 266 crores advertising industry. An obvious reason for this is slow adoption of smartphone and mobile internet in India. As per data released in the third quarter of 2011, the smartphone market in India was not growing over a 6% rate. However, a recent study conducted by Google in association with IPSOS continues to rely heavily on the potential of mobile media, which is arguably the only omnipotent multi-media device in India.

TRAI Tariff Order aligns but at what cost (Premium) - View Free Sample
In the run-up to the first cable TV digitization deadline of June 30, 2012 for metros, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) latest order specifying tariffs and setting other norms for smooth implementation of the process has stirred up a hornet's nest. While the TRAI order is certainly a good move to streamline matters in the direction of digitization, most industry stakeholders have been busy trying to dissect each clause to see how it impacts their business. Even as the broadcast industry is shocked by the diktat of a uniform, legalized carriage fee structure, Multi System Operators (MSOs) find they have a lot of responsibility on their hands. The consumer, meanwhile, is empowered to pick and pay for channels of his choice.
