Moneycontrol
An Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM), headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, will meet on June 5 to decide on the base price for the much-awaited auction of telecom spectrum, Department of Telecom Secretary R Chandrashekhar said. The detailed analysis by sector regulator TRAI of the impact of spectrum price on tariff if it is passed on, and in case it is absorbed what its effect would be on companies' businesses, its viability and the return on investment, along with TRAI's recommendations, would be presented to the EGoM for its decision. DoT lends new twist to 2G auction
Livemint
In a fresh twist to the ongoing saga on spectrum auction, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is proposing a halving of the payment period for the spectrum that an operator wins in the coming auction, while leaving the validity of the spectrum and the licence unchanged at 20 years. The move is intended to make it easier for the companies to pay for the spectrum upfront and thereby increase the number of bidders. A senior DoT official said that after this period, "they (the telcos) will have to pay the new prevailing market price at the time." He added that they had asked TRAI to give an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of such a move for the operators and the government. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

Telecom operator MTS India, too, is paying better bonuses this year. Vlad Pozdyshev, Chief HR officer, says bonuses ranged from 75 percent to 125 percent to employees in India (based on performance). Broadband can make education more accessible: Kapil Sibal
Economic Times
The potential of broadband gives us the hope that millions of children will not be left outside the reach of the ongoing knowledge revolution, Union Minister for Human Resource Development and Telecom Kapil Sibal said on Monday. "Fast, affordable broadband can connect children who do not have proximate access to decent education resources to world-class online resources," he said, given the huge gaps in terms of physical infrastructure, quality teachers, and accountability in India's education system. R-Com says Infratel stake sale waiting on spectrum, other issues
Livemint
The management of Reliance Communications Ltd. (R-Com), the mobile telephony arm of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group, said that the proposed sale of its telecom tower assets will only proceed further once issues such as spectrum pricing and allocation are sorted out by regulatory authorities. "We are engaged with potential investors to sell a stake in Infratel (Reliance Infratel Ltd., R-Com's telecom tower subsidiary)," Punit Garg, President, R-Com, said during a conference call with analysts on Monday. "There are pending regulatory issues and the DoT (Department of Telecommunications) and TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) are working out aspects like spectrum allocation and pricing. The transaction will proceed further once clarity emerges." Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

A fresh war of words has broken out between the GSM operators' lobby COAI, and Tata Teleservices after the industry body representing Bharti, Vodafone, and Idea, among others, asked Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to include the 19 permits that were granted to Tatas in the upcoming sale process. Late Monday evening, Tata Teleservices issued a strongly worded statement terming COAI's stance as 'misleading, totally uncalled for, false and devoid of any merit'. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

Aircel approaches TDSAT over refund of liquidated damages
Economic Times
Aircel on May 28, requested the TDSAT to direct the government to either refund around Rs 75 crore, that DoT had charged for delay in roll-out of services, or adjust the same into licence fee to be paid by the operator. The TDSAT on January 13, 2012, had set aside liquidated damages imposed on new telecom operators for delay in meeting roll-out obligations and had directed the DoT to refund the money within a month along with 12 percent interest. However, DoT in a letter informed the operator that the penalty could not be adjusted into the licence fee to be paid by Aircel.

Vodafone to opt for international arbitration against Indian tax authorities
Economic Times
British telecom giant Vodafone is likely to rely on international arbitration under the India-Netherlands investment protection agreement rather than approach Indian courts as its epic dispute with the Indian tax authorities looks set to resume soon with the passage of the Union Budget. An executive aware of the company's plans said the international arbitration route would be preferable as domestic options may be limited. The development comes even as inter-ministerial government panel on Monday decided to inform Vodafone that its arbitration notice under the India-Netherlands investments protection treaty was premature. The Finance Bill 2012 has not yet received presidential assent. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

Cellular News
Huawei has announced the launch of its mobile broadband (MBB) research laboratory, mLAB. Huawei's mLAB facilitates close cooperation with MBB industry players and is open to customers to experience Huawei's MBB solutions for HSPA/LTE and future network environments. A plan to help shrink mobile phone bills
Livemint
Delhi-based financial adviser Manish Sinha had not anticipated that 3G data usage could put a serious hole in his pocket. It was Jigar Doshi's similar experience that spurred them to develop an application on the Android platform that tracks voice calls and messages from a phone to provide the best available plan in the market. The six-month-old free application that has crossed 4,000 downloads, even keeps tabs while roaming, calculating incoming calls that would add to the overall expense. The partners are reluctant to speak about the revenue model, which they hope to put in place by the end of this month. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

LG's new smartphone LCD panel beats iphone's retina display
Techtree
LG's brand new 5" Full HD LCD panel caters to a growing trend of smartphones with large screens. Its AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) display incorporates better viewing angles and colour fidelity than a regular LCD display. The bump-up in screen size doesn't come at the cost of image sharpness, has faster response times for better gaming, and claims to possess better brightness efficiency for longer battery life. Expect this LCD screen to ship with your favourite mobile phone starting from the second half of 2012. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

To cater for the enormous growth in the transfer of wireless data, fourth generation (4G) mobile communications devices and networks are being introduced. Long Term Evolution, or LTE as it is referred to, is a standardized technology that has been designed to offer greater capacity and speed over the mobile network to address the increasing data demands of mobile devices. LTE uses the latest antenna technologies to transmit data in different ways than previous generations of mobile communication technologies and is also extremely efficient in its use of the available spectrum.

The Evolving Security Paradigm in an increasingly Mobile World (Premium) - View Free Sample
As more and more employees use personal mobile devices to access enterprise networks and applications, there are increasing risks to the security of confidential information through new entrance points for potential attacks. Mobile technology today is taking communications and security to a whole new level. Consumers are increasingly looking to bring their smartphones, tablets and other devices that have transformed their personal lives to work. This means people can work anywhere at any time, creating new efficiencies for businesses -but also new challenges for protecting enterprise data. Rapid adoption of mobile technology will soon make security concerns in the wireless environment at least equal to those in the wired world. While these risks may persuade IT departments to think twice about deploying the latest mobile technologies, the headwind favouring delivery of broader access to applications and emerging cloudbased services underlines the fact that mobile devices are now an essential business productivity tool.

1G Solution for a 3G World (Premium) - View Free Sample
With the introduction of expensive 3G in 2011 and 4G in 2012 in India, here is an effective application which will help one to stay connected at reasonably less cost. 2011 started with a lot of anticipation around the onset of 3G and recent introduction of 4G--how they would change the mobile landscape. There was a heightened sense of anxiety, and common perception was that the game-changing technology would forever alter the way users used their phones. After all, 3G itself was arriving after a very long wait and tremendous investments into spectrum. Although talking of 4G is too early now, but as far as 3G is concerned, in hindsight, it turned out to be a bit of an anti-climax. What did not happen overnight is the explosive proliferation of the mobile internet. I was fortunate to witness this whole cycle play out in both Egypt and Indonesia, not so long ago, in exactly the same fashion. Of course, 3G means better data speed for existing data users but that literally touches only one in 10 mobile users in India today. The IAMAI report pegs mobile data users at 46 mn, while mobile users are over 600 mn.

Why Smartphones will make a difference in Advertising (Premium) - View Free Sample
A recent study conducted by Google and IPSOS indicates that India will soon be a 'mobile first' nation for communication. The challenge of advertising on mobile platforms is the most over-rated concern in the digital advertising domain in India. While presence of brands on digital media has only been increasing every year, along with spends, mobile advertising garners a rather negligible share in the total advertising pie. As per recent industry estimates, mobile advertising constitutes not more than 1% share of the total ad spends in the Rs 266 crores advertising industry. An obvious reason for this is slow adoption of smartphone and mobile internet in India. As per data released in the third quarter of 2011, the smartphone market in India was not growing over a 6% rate. However, a recent study conducted by Google in association with IPSOS continues to rely heavily on the potential of mobile media, which is arguably the only omnipotent multi-media device in India.

TRAI Tariff Order aligns but at what cost (Premium) - View Free Sample
In the run-up to the first cable TV digitization deadline of June 30, 2012 for metros, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) latest order specifying tariffs and setting other norms for smooth implementation of the process has stirred up a hornet's nest. While the TRAI order is certainly a good move to streamline matters in the direction of digitization, most industry stakeholders have been busy trying to dissect each clause to see how it impacts their business. Even as the broadcast industry is shocked by the diktat of a uniform, legalized carriage fee structure, Multi System Operators (MSOs) find they have a lot of responsibility on their hands. The consumer, meanwhile, is empowered to pick and pay for channels of his choice.
