Choice of Mobile Operating Systems

Businesses of today have set their eyes on enterprise mobility and the cloud in a bid to do away with geographical and cultural boundaries. Instant access to view or update latest information from / to a single source from personal or company owned mobile devices now threaten the security of corporate networks, although mobility serves to improve performance, productivity and service levels. In addition to the mobile devices, wi-fi services, and device management software that govern the game, the operation systems that reside on these devices play an important role in ensuring the safety of the device itself and the security of data stored on them or accessed through them. Blackberry OS from RIM, iOS from Apple and Android from Google are three mobile operating systems competing for the top market positions today, although others such as Symbian, Meego, Windows Phone 7 and Bada too are in use but not strictly in competition.

Centre seeks recall of SC order that blames PMO officials in 2G spectrum case
Economic Times
The Centre has moved the Supreme Court seeking recall of its order which had blamed the officials of the PMO for delaying the plea of the Janata Party President, Subramanian Swamy. The plea had sought sanction of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to prosecute the then Telecoms Minister A Raja in the 2G spectrum scam case. The government said that it was not challenging the findings in the judgement on the locus but was seeking review for the "limited extent of correcting certain errors apparent in the judgement" as the remarks were also made against the officers of PMO who were not party to the litigation. The government added that there was error in the judgement relating to the "scope of scrutiny by the competent authority of the request for sanction for prosecution." Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

Delink FM radio frequency from licence: DoT panel
Livemint
As part of efforts to streamline spectrum allocation by the Indian government, an internal committee of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has recommended that FM radio frequencies be auctioned after being delinked from the broadcast licence of the information and broadcasting ministry. "Considering their commercial revenue potential, FM radio frequencies may in principle be auctioned by DoT or WPC (Wireless Planning and Coordination) after being delinked from the broadcast licence of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB)," said an internal DoT note. The move would bring clarity in the roles, functions, and assets of the two ministries, and avoid confusion about the valuation of radio spectrum and distribution of auction proceeds. Telecoms Minister Kapil Sibal has listed convergence of media and technologies as one of the main objectives of the NTP. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

RIL weighs voice options with 4G
Business Standard
Reliance Industries Limited, which plans to mark its re-entry into the telecom sector by launching its 4G services this year, is known to be evaluating various options of offering voice with the service. Infotel Broadband Services, in which the Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate has a 95 percent stake, has a pan-India licence for broadband wireless access. RIL has already proclaimed its preference for the next-generation LTE (long-term evolution) to offer high-speed data services through Wimax spectrum. Industry insiders say the combination of 4G data with voice (which Wimax offers) can put conventional telcos under a lot of strain." Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email

CBI expands probe to pre-2007 licences
Business Standard
In its next big step in the 2G probe, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will now look at telecom companies that were granted licences before 2007. The investigating agency has sought from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) the details of adjusted gross revenues, provided by unified access service licensees for all circles and operators, for additional spectrum of above 8 MHz, from 2002-03 to 2007-08. The investigations are in response to a December 2010 Supreme Court directive that had asked the CBI to look into any irregularity in the grant of licences between 2001 and 2007, with emphasis on the loss caused to the exchequer and corresponding gain to licensees.

Mobile industry eyes savings by recycling
PhysOrg
More than a billion mobile phones are made every year but fewer than one percent are recycled, experts say, noting that billions of dollars could be saved if consumers go green. A typical mobile phone weighing less than 150 grams contains valuable material such as gold, silver, and rare minerals - highly sought after elements critical in high technology manufacturing. "Given today's low collection and recycling rates, nearly all of this material is lost," said the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a research institute. Analysts argue that there is a strong economic case for recycling and reuse, not to mention an environmental one. If the most reusable components such as the camera, display and battery and charger were stripped out, and used in the production of new devices, the costs of remanufacturing low-cost mobile phones could be slashed by 50 percent.
